Data is encoded magnetically by read/write heads that float on a cushion of air above the platters.

    how to
  • A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic.

  • (How To’s) Multi-Speed Animations

  • Providing detailed and practical advice

Another trip to Home Depot. I got a little magnetic bowl - bigger than the 2 I got from Rockler, but they've been so handy so far (and always full :). I also bought a second pair of these kneepads. The ones I bought months ago were missing one strap. I figured by now it would be weird to go back with an unused pair months later and claim a missing strap, so I just bought a new set, took a strap off it and put it on my old, opened, but unused set, and later returned these as "missing a strap." It's not true, but it is true, and the returns lady didn't see anything weird about a return from the day before, nor did she ask any questions. I just didn't want to have to explain why I hadn't returned the other defective pair after something like 3 months (lazy/busy).

Oh, and I completely screwed up cutting the last rod on the last door for the 2-point latching system. I had the rod extended when I marked the pieces, instead of retracted, so I cut them way short. I flopped around on the floor in agony - this was the last thing to do! - and thought and thought about how to repair it. The rods are pretty flush with the door, so I couldn't really build any armature to connect on more rods from the scrap cutoffs. I wasn't really going to be able to modify the rods. It took everything my 12" miter saw and metal cutting disc had to get through that hard steel. The only thing I could think of was rod couplings (orange bag), cutting the rods to about half their incorrect length, threading them, and 2 scrap cutoffs with a die (Irwin tap & die set at top), and screwing them together, remarking them, and cutting them to the proper length this time.

First repair panel held in place with magnets salvaged from old hard disk drives. You won't believe how strong they are. Just don't try MIG welding too close to one, it's like having no gas. Nasty.
